India: Himachal Pradesh High Court seeking to reduce pre-trial detainee population

The High Court in Himachal Pradesh has ordered all trial courts to complete the cases of all individuals who have been held in pre-trial detention for more than 1 year by the end of May. As at 31 July 2010, there were 124 of these cases pending, 75 of which had been finalised by the 31 December 2010.

Of the remaining cases, 18 cases are before the session division Kinnaur at Rampur, two at Shimla and one at Sirmaur. There are no cases pending with subordinate courts of Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Una and Chamba.
